Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, OIH commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a winger for Spanish club Real Madrid and serves as captain of the Portuguese national team. Ronaldo currently holds the distinction of being the most expensive player in football history after having transferred to Real Madrid from Manchester United in a deal worth £80 million. His contract with Real Madrid is believed to have made him the highest-paid football player in the world.
Ronaldo's precocious talent caught the attention of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and he signed the 18-year-old for £12.24 million in 2003. In 2008, Ronaldo won his first UEFA Champions League title, and was named player of the tournament.
Ronaldo, starting his first home match in over two months due to his ankle injury, also created a goal and missed a penalty as Madrid made hard work of seeing off lowly Almeria. That sparked the home side into action, and Madrid responded with goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema - who netted after Ronaldo's penalty had been saved - and then Ronaldo in the final 17 minutes.
Only superb goalkeeping by Almeria's Diego Alves kept Madrid down to one goal during a one-sided first half, with the Brazilian doing superbly to deny Rafael van der Vaart (twice), Higuain (twice), Ronaldo and Esteban Granero in the first period.
Ronaldo went crashing after attempting to round Alves, but the Almeria goalkeeper looked to get his hands on the ball.
Last weekend was a tough one for the world’s most expensive football star Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid got beaten 2-0 by Barcelona in El Clasico, and Cristiano Ronaldo got whistled for his unimpressive performance.
